Apple iPad Mini vs. Samsung Galaxy Note II: Deciding to Choose Between them

They?re among the hottest devices out in the market this time of the year, and needless to say, they?re both really impressive. They may primarily be different, one being a formidable competition in the tightly contested tablet arena, and the other a phablet ? having created a category of its own. But, given that the iPad Mini and the Galaxy Note II are among the best creations of the two major, tech rivals, you can see why we decided to pit one against the other. So let?s dive in to see their similarities and differences.

The looks: This is the first thing that catches your eye about any gadget, so we decided to start from the outside and work our way in. The iPad Mini does have a larger screen of 7.9 inches against the Galaxy Note II?s 5.55 inch display. But that?s understandable ? given that the iPad Mini will still be marketed within the tablet category, while the latter has a niche of its own in the phablet world. Apple has put an IPS LCD screen with a 1024X768 pixel resolution; however, the Note II has a higher resolution Super AMOLED display with 265 ppi resolution. The iPad Mini is available in black and white color options, while the Galaxy Note II sports either a blue or white casing.

Tech specs: Powering the iPad Mini is an Apple A5 dual-core 1 GHz processor with 1 GB RAM. The Galaxy Note II is far more powerful, with a Samsung Exynos 4 quad-core 1.6 GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM. We have to say that?s a lot of power packed into such a small package, but we?re mighty impressed! In terms of the OS, the iPad Mini runs iOS 6 while the Galaxy Note II runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. We can?t really compare the two OS?s, because that becomes a lengthy discourse in itself. A sore point missing in the iPad Mini is the microSD card slot for memory expansion, which is a huge advantage the Note II has.

Camera power: Samsung has clearly put a lot of thought into making the Galaxy Note II so stellar. With an 8 MP rear camera with LED flash and 1.9 MP front-facing camera, this one?s far more effective than the iPad Mini. The iPad Mini, on the other hand, has a 5 MP rear camera and 1.2 MP front-facing one. But, given that their functions are a little different since the Note II will be considered as a smartphone while the iPad Mini will function as just a tablet, the camera power seems adequate for them in their own leagues.

Connectivity: Like we mentioned before, the Galaxy Note II is essentially a smartphone (a really smart one at that!), while the iPad Mini is a tablet. Both devices support LTE networks as well as 3G. In addition, both have Bluetooth and WiFi as well.

Apple vs. Samsung: No injunctions, no jury new trial, no more Euro-FRAND shenanigans

Apple's been denied an injunction against Samsung, Samsung's been denied a new trial against Apple, and Europe is being denied more FRAND-based patent nonsense. Want to know more? Seriously?

Apple has been denied an injunction on Samsung products that were found to infringe on Apple?s patents. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh determined that Apple failed to demonstrate that the demand for Samsung?s products came from technology that Samsung copied. As only three of the devices found to infringe on Apple?s patents are currently on the market, all part of the Galaxy S II line, so this doesn?t come as a surprise. Newer phones like the Galaxy S III were not part of Apple's injunction efforts, and have already been added to an upcoming lawsuit set to go to trial in 2014.

Judge Koh also ruled yesterday that there would be no new trial despite Samsung?s allegations of juror misconduct. Samsung had accused Velvin Hogan of hiding his involvement in a lawsuit with Seagate. Koh said that because Hogan disclosed his employment with Seagate at the time of jury selection, Samsung?s legal team had plenty of time to raise objections to his selection. Samsung had also claimed that Hogan's post-trial interviews had demonstrated that he had swayed the jury, but Samsung had never claimed nor demonstrated that Hogan had introduced "outside knowledge specific to the facts of this case" to the jury in their motions, and Koh denied their motion.

Finally, Samsung has announced that they will be dropping their efforts to seek injunctions in Europe against Apple devices using technology covered by Samsung?s FRAND (free, reasonable, and non-descriminatory) patents. While Samsung will still seek damages in lawsuits going forward, they have withdrawn requests for import bans on Apple products. While Samsung claims that this is about ?protecting consumer choice?, it probably has more to do with the fact that they are being investigated by the European Commission over possible abuses of FRAND patents.

PFT: Big trouble ahead?for Big Blue?

With six different games matching up teams with winning records, yesterday was hyped by the NFL as ?Statement Sunday.? And while it didn?t deliver a lot of particularly competitive games, it certainly did deliver a lot of statements: Statements about the strengths of the Falcons, Packers, Broncos, Texans, Cowboys and 49ers, and statements about the weaknesses of the Giants, Bears, Ravens, Colts, Steelers and Patriots.

But the thing about statements made in the NFL in December is that they often don?t hold up in January. And I?m not so sure that the teams that made statements on Sunday are going to be the teams that continue to make statements in the playoffs. So let me go through a few of the statements that were made on Sunday, and explain which ones are true and which ones are false.

1. The Falcons are the best team in the NFC. FALSE: Yes, the Falcons can make the statement that they?re the best team in the conference, both on the strength of their 34-0 win over the Giants and on their status as the team with the best record in the NFC. But the Falcons don?t play that well consistently ? let?s not forget that a week earlier, they lost by 10 to a bad Carolina team. I?d pick either the Packers or the 49ers to win at Atlanta in January.

2. The Giants are in danger. TRUE: The flip side of the Falcons? blowout over the Giants is that it really did expose some serious problems with the Giants, namely that Eli Manning has been painfully inconsistent, and that injuries in the secondary have done major damage to the defense. Early in the season it looked like the NFC East would belong to the Giants, but now it?s a three-team race, and the Redskins and Cowboys actually appear to be in better shape. The good news for the Giants is that they?ll make the playoffs if they win their final two. The bad news is that the way they played on Sunday, I don?t have a lot of confidence that they?ll win their final two.

3. The Bears are in free fall and will miss the playoffs. FALSE: It?s easy to see why Bears fans are panicking, having lost five of their last six games. But Chicago?s schedule is about to get a lot easier, with trips to Arizona and Detroit. I see the Bears winning both games, finishing 10-6, and sneaking into the playoffs.

4. The road to the Super Bowl in the AFC goes through Houston. TRUE: After the Texans? disastrous loss in New England on Monday night, it would have been easy to disregard the Texans as legitimate title contenders. But the Texans clinched the AFC South with Sunday?s win over the Colts, and they?re now a win away from clinching home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. I think they?ll get that win against the Vikings on Sunday and ensure that if they rematch the Patriots, it will be in Houston.

5. The Broncos are the best team Peyton Manning has ever played on. TRUE: Does it sound premature to say that this year?s Broncos are better than Manning?s Super Bowl-winning 2006 team in Indianapolis? Maybe. But that team ? like many of Manning?s teams in Indianapolis ? had major holes on both defense and special teams that the Manning-led offense had to overcome. This Broncos team is winning every bit as much because of its defense as because of the Manning-led offense. If we could stuff these 2012 Broncos into a DeLorean and send them back in time to play any of Manning?s Indianapolis playoff teams, I?d pick these Broncos to win.

6. The Steelers blew it in overtime in Dallas and blew their postseason hopes. FALSE: The Steelers? final two games are both at home, against the Bengals and the Browns, and if they win both they?re in the playoffs. I think Pittsburgh is going to do it.

7. New England?s Super Bowl hopes were dealt a big blow on Sunday night. FALSE: The Patriots? loss to the 49ers probably means they?ll have to host a wild card team in the first playoff weekend, then win a couple of road games after that to get to the Super Bowl. But you know what? As much as I like the Broncos and Texans, I like the Patriots? chances of winning at Denver and at Houston in back-to-back weeks. New England is still a formidable Super Bowl contender.

That?s where I stand on the statements NFL teams made on Sunday. And now here are my statements about the rest of Sunday?s action:

Adrian Peterson is making Eric Dickerson nervous. After his 212-yard effort on Sunday, Peterson needs to total 293 yards over the final two games of the season to break Dickerson?s NFL record of 2,105 rushing yards in a season. Gaining 293 yards in two weeks isn?t easy, but it?s certainly doable for Peterson, considering that he has 366 in the last two games. In the last eight games, Peterson has rushed for 1,313 yards, a stunning yardage total that no NFL player has ever matched over an eight-game stretch of a season.

Calvin Johnson is making Jerry Rice nervous. After his 121-yard effort on Sunday, Johnson needs to total 181 yards over the final two games of the season to break Rice?s NFL record of 1,848 receiving yards in a season. Johnson tied an NFL record with his seventh consecutive 100-yard game on Sunday, so totaling 181 yards over the next two games shouldn?t be a problem. Johnson also became the first player in NFL history to gain 1,600 receiving yards in back-to-back seasons. Unfortunately for Johnson (and unlike Peterson), he?s threatening an NFL record while playing meaningless games for a bad team.

What?s JaMarcus Russell up to these days? I ask because the Raiders chose Russell first overall in the 2007 NFL draft, leaving Johnson available for the Lions to draft second overall, and Peterson available for the Vikings to draft seventh overall. Sorry to have to bring that one up, Raiders fans.

Trent Richardson?s first touchdown run was a thing of beauty. If you love good, old-fashioned, hard-nosed football, it doesn?t get much better than Richardson taking a handoff up the middle at the six-yard line, plunging into the middle and getting stacked up just as he crossed the line of scrimmage, and then simply refusing to go down as he drove forward, churning his legs and getting help from his entire offensive line while the entire Redskins? defensive line was trying to stop him, and finally falling forward through that massive rugby scrum and into the end zone. As a rookie Richardson hasn?t been the big-play runner the Browns were hoping they?d get when they traded up to take him with the third overall pick in the draft, but he might be the toughest runner to tackle in the league.

Randall Cobb is better than you realize. Cobb had an unreal leaping catch along the sideline in the second quarter in Chicago, picking up 31 yards on third-and-six and somehow getting both feet down in bounds despite taking a hard hit just as he was grabbing the ball. Cobb has been an excellent player for the Packers since arriving last season as a second-round draft pick, but I don?t know if most fans realize just how excellent. Cobb has 2,241 combined rushing, receiving and return yards this season, and 3,857 all-purpose yards so far in his NFL career. That?s an incredible career total for a guy who?s only 22 years old.

The Seahawks are stunning. After beating the Cardinals 58-0 last week, the Seahawks beat the Bills 50-17 this week. The last NFL team to score 50 or more points in back-to-back weeks was the 1950 New York Giants, who beat the Chicago Cardinals 51-21 and then beat the Baltimore Colts 55-20 a week later. (A note of caution for Seahawks fans: Those 1950 Giants were held to just three points in a postseason loss that year.)

I guess Cam Cameron wasn?t the only problem with the Ravens? offense. The Ravens fired Cameron as their offensive coordinator last week. So how did the offense in Baltimore do in the first game without him? Badly: The Ravens had six three-and-outs, the most of any team in the NFL all season, as they lost 34-17. On Statement Sunday, the Ravens made a statement that they?re not contenders in the AFC, and Cameron made a major statement in his absence: Don?t blame me.

Warner Bros and MGM invest in social-gaming company Kabam

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Warner Bros Entertainment Inc and MGM Studios Inc have joined forces to invest an undisclosed amount in the privately-held, social and mobile gaming company, Kabam Inc, the games maker said on Tuesday.

San Francisco-based Kabam, which is known for its popular "Kingdoms of Camelot" strategy games that allow players to build castles and battle troops in a medieval setting, competes with gaming companies like Zynga Inc and Kixeye.

Founded in 2006, Kabam focuses on "mid-core" games, which are immersive games that sit between slickly produced titles like Activision Blizzard Inc's "Call of Duty" and casual games like Zynga's bread-and-butter "FarmVille."

Kevin Tsujihara, president of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will join Kabam's board of directors as a member and MGM's CEO and chairman Gary Barber will join as an observer on the board, the games company said.

Time Warner Inc, the parent of Warner Bros, has previously made investments in game studios like CrowdStar and Trion Worlds through its investment fund called Time Warner Investments.

MGM Studios, which emerged from bankruptcy last year after signing a distribution deal for two James Bond films, including the recent hit "Skyfall," has an interactive division that published the "RoboCop" action-shooter game for consoles and PCs in 2003.

The three companies have worked together previously before signing the latest investment deal. More than a year ago, Kabam partnered with Warner Bros' interactive division to co-develop "The Hobbit, Kingdoms of Middle-earth" mobile game based on Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit Trilogy" that was produced by MGM and New Line Cinema.

Warner and Kabam are developing a second Hobbit game, "The Hobbit: Armies of the Third Age," for release early next year. The first of three planned "The Hobbit" movies, will be released on December 14.

Google Ventures, Intel Capital, Canaan Partners and Redpoint Ventures have previously invested in Kabam, which has offices in the United States, China and Luxembourg.

Kabam generated more than $100 million in gross revenue in 2011 and has grown that by over 50 percent this year, a Kabam spokesperson said.

Mild sprain has Redskins' RG3 uncertain for Sunday

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) ? All the medical terms associated with Robert Griffin III's knee injury can be boiled down to one simple message: It's not too bad.

Beyond that, there are still some very important unknowns.

The NFL's top-rated quarterback might or might not play Sunday when the Washington Redskins visit the Cleveland Browns. Coach Mike Shanahan, knowing full well that it makes the other team work extra to prepare for two quarterbacks, will no doubt wait as long as possible to publicly commit one way or the other to Griffin or fellow rookie Kirk Cousins.

"Both of them will have a game plan," Shanahan said Monday.

The interior of Griffin's right knee was the subject of intense scrutiny during Shanahan's weekly news conference, when it was shown that an injury to a franchise player like RG3 can flummox even a seasoned coach. Shanahan initially said Griffin had a "strain of the ACL" before later correcting the diagnosis to a sprained LCL, with the coach stepping away from the podium to demonstrate the location of the ligament involved.

The upshot: Griffin has a mild, or Grade 1, sprain of the lateral collateral ligament located on the outside of the knee, caused when he was hit by defensive tackle Haloti Ngata at the end of a 13-yard scramble late in regulation of the 31-28 overtime win over the Baltimore Ravens.

"When I looked at it on film," Shanahan said, "I thought it would be worse than it was."

The LCL is one of four ligaments in the knee. A Grade 1 sprain typically means the ligament is stretched or has some minor tears and usually doesn't require surgery. Griffin will get multiple treatments daily and will probably have to wear a brace for several weeks.

The next major benchmark is whether Griffin will able to take part when practice resumes on Wednesday.

"You're hoping with rehab it gets better very quickly," Shanahan said. "But we don't know for sure. ... He's definitely not ruled out for the Cleveland game."

Griffin's father, Robert Griffin Jr., said in a text message that his son was "feeling good" and that "we will know by Thursday" whether Griffin III will be able to suit up against the Browns.

The most severe knee injury usually associated with sports is a season-ending torn ACL, the anterior cruciate ligament. Griffin tore the ACL in his right knee while playing for Baylor in 2009, but Shanahan said Griffin's reconstructed ACL "looks great" and that there's "no problem there."

"He's doing good. He's in high spirits," left tackle Trent Williams said after speaking with Griffin on Monday. "It was a pretty nasty, awkward hit, and for him not to be seriously injured is a blessing."

No. 2 overall pick Griffin has become a phenomenon in his debut NFL season, leading the Redskins ? a team that went 5-11 last year ? to four straight victories to put the record at 7-6, one game behind the first-place New York Giants in the NFC East. His performance Sunday put him atop the league with a 104.2 passer rating, better than Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and everyone else.

Fourth-rounder Cousins might not be much of a drop-off, especially after his super-sub performance against the Ravens. When Griffin left for one play, Cousins converted a third-and-6 with a pass to Pierre Garcon that drew a pass interference penalty on Chris Johnson.

When Griffin left for good later in the drive, Cousins completed two passes in two plays, and his nice pump fake allowed Garcon to get open for an 11-yard touchdown with 29 seconds left in regulation.

Cousins then did his best RG3 impersonation, running the quarterback draw on the 2-point conversion to tie the game.

"You're running the scout team the majority of the time, and you're expected to go in there and perform," Shanahan said. "So there's a lot of pressure on people. Some people can handle it; other people can't. But when you prepare yourself like he has, it didn't surprise me that he was flawless in what he did."

Shanahan defended the decision to have Griffin return to the game for four plays after the injury, saying he left the decision in the hands of Dr. James Andrews, the renowned sports physician who is on the sidelines for most Redskins games.

"He's the one that gives me that information," Shanahan said. "It's way over my head."

Saliva analysis can reveal decision-making skills

Dec. 10, 2012 ? A study conducted by researchers at the University of Granada Group of Neuropsychology and Clinical Psychoneuroimmunology has demonstrated that cortisol levels in saliva are associated with a person's ability to make good decisions in stressful situations.

To perform this study, the researchers exposed the participants (all women) to a stressful situation by using sophisticated virtual reality technology. The study revealed that people who are not skilled in decision-making have lower baseline cortisol levels in saliva as compared to skilled people.

Cortisol -- known as the stress hormone -- is a steroid hormone segregated at the adrenal cortex and stimulated by the adrenocorticotropic (ACTH) hormone, which is produced at the pituitary gland. Cortisol is involved in a number of body systems and plays a relevant role in the muscle-skeletal system, blood circulation, the immune system, the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and proteins and the nervous system.

Recent studies have demonstrated that stress can influence decision-making in people. This cognitive component might be considered one of the human resources for coping with stress.

Study of 40 Healthy Women

To verify that decision-making skills might modulate human response to psychosocial stress, the University of Granada researchers evaluated the decision-making process in 40 healthy women. Participants were asked to perform the so-called "Iowa Gambling Task." Next, participants were presented a stressful situation in a virtual environment consisting on delivering a speech in front of a virtual audience. Researchers evaluated the participants' response to stress by examining the activation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis, and measuring cortisol levels in saliva at different points of the stressful situation.

Professors Isabel Peralta and Ana Santos state that this study provides preliminary evidence on an existing relationship between decision-making ability -- which may play a major role in coping with stress -- and low cortisol levels in psychosocially stressful situations. This means that the effects of psychological stress on the health people with lower cortisol levels might be milder.

Commissioners, again, discuss Kiwanis Christmas Parade route

The route for the annual Kiwanis Christmas Parade is set for tonight?s festive event in Lake Wales.

But it could change again next year as a result of a discussion during Tuesday night?s Lake Wales City Commission meeting.

The parade, whose theme is ?It?s Christmas Time in the City and Country,? will begin about 6 p.m. The route will take the parade from Lakeshore, up Central to Martin Luther King Boulevard. It will end there.

Several of the merchants along Stuart and Park avenues were disappointed about the change. The parade has gone through downtown for years and included Stuart and Park.

As a result of the city?s downtown landscaping project there was concern about the plants being trampled and the irrigation system being damaged.

Dr. TJ McKeon, the event coordinator, said earlier it wasn?t the Kiwanis Club of Lake Wales? decision regarding the route. McKeon said the city didn?t want the parade on Stuart and Park.

McKeon believes the ?straight shot? route is the safest and cheapest. He noted the staging area for the parade at Lake Wales Park is larger and more secure.

At the commission meeting Mayor Mike Carter brought up the issue of the route.

McKeon said the club is open to change and will do what is best for the city.

Kevin Respress of Main Street said his organization loves the old route.

?We will support Kiwanis and the parade,? Respress said. ?We will work together.?

The parade will pass through downtown on Central.

?We?ve moved it one block,? McKeon said.

California Terror Suspects Plead Not Guilty, Alleged Ringleader Returns From Afghanistan

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- A man suspected of being the ringleader of a plot to kill Americans and bomb U.S. military bases overseas has been returned from Afghanistan, authorities said Wednesday.

American Sohiel Omar Kabir, 34, made his first court appearance Tuesday in the U.S. after he was captured by U.S. special forces in Afghanistan last month, said his attorney, Deputy Federal Public Defender Jeffrey Aaron.

Kabir has not yet entered a plea after being charged with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists. He is being held without bond and scheduled to appear in court Dec. 11.

Meanwhile, Ralph Deleon and Arifeen Gojail, both 21, and Miguel Santana Vidriales, 23, pleaded not guilty Wednesday after being indicted on the same charge.

If convicted, each of the four defendants could face up to 15 years in prison.

Deleon, Vidriales and Gojali were arrested as they waited to board a plane headed for Istanbul on their way to Afghanistan to meet with Kabir, authorities said.

In video calls from Afghanistan, Kabir told the trio he would arrange meetings with terrorists, investigators said.

The group prepared for their trip to the Middle East by simulating combat with paintball rifles and concocting cover stories, court documents state.

Authorities don't believe there were any plans for an attack in the U.S., but Deleon and Vidriales told a confidential FBI informant they would consider American jihad, according to an FBI affidavit.

The case against Kabir is based on hearsay statements from co-defendants and an FBI informant, Aaron said, adding that federal prosecutors have turned over few documents since the arrest.

He added that his client suffered physical injuries to his face and head when he was captured in Kabul, where he was staying with family members.

"He wasn't hospitalized but he probably should have been," Aaron said.

FBI spokesman Laura Eimiller said Kabir suffered "combat-related injuries" during his capture. The injuries were treated by American medical personnel and he was cleared to be taken back to the U.S.

Kabir, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Afghanistan, served in the Air Force from 2000 to 2001 and introduced Deleon and Santana to radical Islamic doctrine, investigators said. Gojali, also a U.S. citizen, was recruited in late September.

Experts who study homegrown terrorism said the case highlights the susceptibility to radicalization of new converts to Islam, particularly among the young.

Katt Williams Arrested After Alleged Bar Rampage

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Katt Williams didn't have much to laugh about this weekend after the comedian was arrested in Seattle, following an incident at a bar during which Williams allegedly attacked a woman with a cigarette, according to the Seattle Police Department.

According to police Williams - born Micah Williams - "exchanged words" with other customers at the World Sports Grille in the city's South Lake Union area Sunday afternoon and "brandished a pool cue" at the bar's manager.

At one point, police say, Williams - who was in town to perform at the Paramount Theatre - followed a family outside of the bar and flicked a lit cigarette into their car, striking a woman just below the eye. He also threw a rock at the car, according to police.

Police showed up at the establishment just before 2:30 in the afternoon and, after a struggle to get Williams into the patrol car, transported him to the West Precinct. Williams was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of assault, harassment and obstruction, police said.

A representative for Williams has not yet responded to TheWrap's request for comment.

According to TMZ, he has been released on bail.

The bar incident wasn't Williams' only brush with police this weekend. According to the Seattle Police Department, after the 41-year-old comedian's show Friday night, three fans claimed Williams attacked them when they tried to take a picture with him after the show. Williams' denied the allegation, saying that the fans had forced their way into his dressing room, and no arrests were made.

Williams told police after the Friday night incident that he planned to cancel Saturday's show and leave town, but apparently didn't.
